How to Call in a Poker Game

Poker is unique among card games in that any betting action after the initial forced bet is completely voluntary. Among the many poker variants in existence today, there are a number of moves or actions that they all share. During a betting round, a player can check, open, call, raise, or fold.

Checking is when the first bet in a betting round has not yet been called, and the player on whose turn it is to make that first bet opts not to, but still wishes to remain in the pot. Essentially, a check indicates that the first bet is zero, and any bet that raises that opens the betting round. After the opening bet, a player must call a bet in order to remain in contention for the pot.

To call a bet is to put in an amount that is equal to or more than the amount that the previous player had wagered. Raising, on the other hand, is when the size of the bet being made is increased. When a player raises at any point during a betting round, all other players have to call this new bet. If a player no longer wishes to make any bets after the round has been open, they can opt to fold. When a player folds, they put away their cards without necessarily having to show them, and they give up any chances of winning the pot.

There are many different kinds of calls. A call is a general term for any kind of betting action made during a poker betting round that allows the player to stay in contention for the pot. Any calls on a bet of a particular amount that has not been raised is called an "overcall," and can also be used to indicate any call made by a player who had already placed money in the pot during the current round.

When a player calls a raised bet before they have placed money into the pot for that round, this is called "cold calling." Any player with a strong hand who calls a bet without raising it is said to be "smooth calling," which is a form of poker "slow play." On the other hand, if a player calls a bet despite the fact that they hand they are holding is not optimal; they are making a "crying call." Another term that can be used to substitute for "calling" is to "see," which is to say that if Player B saw Player A's bet, B has called A's bet.
